Exercise on Referral Scheme at Shrewsbury Sports Village

running machine

The Exercise on Referral Scheme is a 12-week scheme which consists of:

  • an initial fitness assessment
  • a 10-week exercise programme, tailored to meet your individual needs
  • a final reassessment

Classes are held weekly, throughout the programme, and are led by a qualified instructor.

Who is Exercise on Referral for?

Exercise referral classes can be delivered to clients with a wide range of medical, physical and mental health conditions, including:

  • anxiety/depression
  • obesity
  • arthritis
  • osteoporosis
  • diabetes types I and II
  • pregnancy
  • heart disease
  • psychological disorders
  • high/low blood pressure
  • respiratory disorders
  • joint replacement
  • stroke recovery
  • muscular-skeletal disorders

How would I benefit from enrolling on the scheme?

Clients who have the kind of conditions that the scheme is designed to combat find that their level of physical activity is hindered, either by their physical ailment, or through a psychological fear of over-exerting themselves. The scheme allows you to gradually build up to a level of activity suitable for you in a safe environment, under the supervision of a qualified instructor.

Over time, it is hoped that the scheme will give you the confidence needed to maintain a physically active lifestyle independently, and experience the range of benefits this brings, such as:

  • improved health and fitness levels
  • strengthened muscles and bones
  • easier movement and better flexibility
  • a reduction in stress levels
  • maintenance of a healthy weight
  • a sense of achievement

How do I enrol onto the scheme?

Clients can be referred onto the scheme by their local GP, practice nurse or health professional. Most GP practices in the area will have the appropriate forms available, but we can also provide them upon request, if necessary. Please contact Leisure Services at Shropshire Council using the details on this page.

Upon receipt of the application form, the exercise instructor will contact you to arrange an assessment. A tailored exercise programme will then be put together by the instructor for you to follow over the 10-week exercise block. Sessions are always supervised by the instructor.
