Local history centres are being created at many libraries throughout Shropshire. At present, there are local history centres in the libraries at Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Oswestry, Craven Arms and Church Stretton, but more are in the pipeline.
The aim is to help people find out more about their families and the history of their communities. Enthusiastic local volunteers are encouraged to become involved and share their knowledge and skills with others.
Grants from MLA West Midlands (the regional council for museums, libraries and archives) and from the Heritage Lottery Fund have enabled centres to be created.
Volunteers are generally present on the following days:
- Craven Arms Library (at the Discovery Centre): Fridays 10am-1pm
- Bridgnorth Library: Fridays 2pm-5pm
- Ludlow Library: Tuesdays 2.30-4.30 (not main holidays)
- Oswestry Library: Fridays 1.30pm-4.30pm
Volunteers at Ludlow Library specialise in different topics and you may be able to make an appointment with a particular volunteer to suit your area of interest.
Do contact the relevant library before you visit, especially during holiday periods when volunteers may not be available.
