Opening hours at Shropshire Archives

Closure period

Shropshire Archives will be closed to visitors from Monday 1 June 2009 for essential work to remodel the public spaces. This will improve the welcome for visitors by opening up the reception area and creating more circulation and display space.

The Service will reopen on Wednesday 8 July 2009 following the new pattern of opening hours (see below).

Archives staff will be providing a ‘Help Desk’ in the Reference Library, Castle Gates, Shrewsbury dealing with family and local history sources :

Help Desk Opening Times:
Wednesdays: 10.00 - 13.00
Thursdays: 10.00 - 13.00

Volunteers from Shropshire Family History Society will also be on hand at the Reference Library to help on Wednesday mornings.

From 8 July 2009 Shropshire Archives will change its opening hours.

Tuesdays Closed
Wednesdays 10.00 - 17.00
Thursdays 10.00 - 20.00 (original documents must be ordered by 17.45)
Fridays 10.00 - 17.00
Saturdays 10.00 - 16.00 (original documents must be ordered by 15.00 Friday)

We advise reserving a place in advance if you want to look at material on microfiche/microfilm. If you want to see original documents, you do not need to book, but you are welcome to order material in advance in person, by email or by telephone. You can also use the Shropshire Archives document request link on this page. You will need a Shropshire Archives Reader's Ticket to consult original documents.

Please note on Saturdays and Thursday evenings, we operate a restricted service due to staffing levels. We are not able to produce original documents after 5.45pm on a Thursday evening. We will not be able to produce documents or books from our stores between 12.30pm and 1.30pm on a Saturday. Also, we cannot guarantee to make photocopies/printouts on demand at these times, so you may be asked to collect them at a later date. If you have a complicated enquiry, or if it is your first visit, please contact us in advance and we will do our best to help.
