What is a short search?
This is a quick 'look-up' for information in a single source - such as a parish register, trade directory or file of photographs. We will search for a maximum of 10 minutes as part of this search.
For lengthier searches, we have a research service where our expert researcher will conduct a detailed search of our records and will produce a report on the information found, including copies where appropriate. The cost is £28 for an hour’s research. There is a longer waiting list for these searches. Please follow the link for more information about this service.
What is the cost of a short search?
We charge £5 for a short search within a single document and we will do this within 10 working days. If the best way of giving the information is a photocopy/print then we will include this for UK customers. We may ask you to sign a copyright declaration. Any photocopies sent abroad will incur an extra charge.
How do I request a short search?
You can use the online form to request a short search and pay your £5 in advance. Alternatively, please download the form and return it with a cheque.
Please be specific in what you are asking us to look for. If you have already found out some information, please let us know (and tell us where your information came from) so that we don't repeat the search.
Please note that the search fee isn't refundable so if you aren't sure whether to use this form, please contact us first.
If your search is likely to take longer, we will advise you to use our Research Service.
We will email or write to you with the results of your search. If we've found information that can be copied for you, we will let you know any additional costs.
What other options do I have?
- you can visit us and carry out the research yourself – use our source guides on subjects and places to help you get started. Follow the links on this page.
- you can do some initial research yourself, using our online catalogues on the Searching our Collections page.
What if I just want copies (and not a search)?
If you already have a document reference number (with page if appropriate) or full details for a parish register copy (i.e. parish, full date and names of parties), then you can request a copy without the need for a search.
The charge of copying depends on the format and condition of the item and there is a handling charge per copying order (up to 5 items). Please find a full list of fees on our main Research Services page.
If the reference or details you supply are not precise enough for us to locate the item to copy, then we will refer you to our short search service.
