What we hold at Shropshire Archives

Survey of the manor of Wem, 1631

Shropshire Archives holds material to help you study virtually any aspect of Shropshire's past. From prehistoric archaeology and geology through to modern times, we have information to help you discover Shropshire's rich heritage.

We hold original archive sources including documents, maps, newspapers and photographs, as well as the county's largest collection of books, pamphlets and periodicals relating to Shropshire and the borough of Telford and Wrekin.

Online catalogues

You can search for details of our collections online, and in some instances view images of the documents or photographs - please select the link 'Searching our Collections'

Visit the Newsplan West Midlands website for details of newspaper titles which can be viewed at Shropshire Archives and elsewhere throughout the West Midlands.

Source lists

These provide details of places and dates covered by particular types of record held at Shropshire Archives. Select any of the titles listed below to download a copy.

Please note that we are beginning to microfiche parish registers that are currently in original format only. This means that we expect some registers will not be available for research until August 2011. Please contact us prior to your visit for further details.

Guides to sources

We publish guides which provide useful information about the different types of records available and how they can help with your research. Many of these are available as free guides to download (use the 'Guide to sources used at Shropshire Archives' link). Our A-Z Guide to Family History Sources and House History Guide are also available for purchase from our shop.

Online and CD ROM sources

We have CD ROM programs providing access to local and national sources of interest to family and local historians. We have a subscription to Ancestry Library Edition so that visitors can use the website free of charge. For further information, please use the 'Online and CD ROM sources' link.

Local history centres
