Helping children to be healthy

For children to develop and grow they need to have a healthy lifestyle and you need to ensure they develop positive approaches to food and exercise from an early age. Your Development Officer (DO) can help you to develop policies and practices to ensure that all the children in your setting are helped to choose a healthy lifestyle.

You can find extracts from local Ofsted reports showing how providers have achieved ‘outstanding’ for their provision in this outcome in the documents listed on the right of this page.

If you prepare food in your setting (including snacks) then you will need to register with your local Environmental Health Department and you can find their contact numbers by following the link in the 'Publications' section of this page.

You will also need to ensure that you have measures in place to minimise the risk of cross contamination and the spread of infectious diseases. Shropshire and Staffordshire Health Protection Unit have produced guidelines to control infection and communicable diseases and you can find this guidance by following the link in the 'Publications' section of this page or contact them directly for a copy on +44(0)1743 261353.

The links on this page will also take you through to some useful websites to help you to promote the health of all the children in your setting.
