Internet safety

The internet can be a fantastic place for young people to learn, have fun and engage with their family and friends. There are, however, risks, which children and young people need to be aware of, to ensure they can protect themselves. Young people are adventurous in their use of new technologies and they are more likely to be more advanced internet users than their parents.

It is important that young people are wise about using the Internet, and as many have far greater skills on the computer than adults, it is easy to assume that all is safe, when sometimes young people may be exposing themselves to risk.

The Byron Review calls for a national strategy on internet safety which empowers children to keep themselves safe while creating a shared culture of responsibility with families, industry, government, the public and the third sector.

Shropshire’s Safeguarding Children Board want young people and their parents to be aware of the risks they may encounter using the internet and that by taking some simple steps these risks can be dramatically reduced.
