About Learning, Employment and Training Services
Learning, Employment and Training Services is accessible to anyone who would like to embrace the opportunity to raise their employability or skills for personal, recreational or career development. It also provides stepping stones back into work, and supports individuals to enhance their future career prospects by offering guided programmes of learning tailored to individual needs and those of families and communities.
Learning, Employment and Training Services is made up of four sections:
- Adult and Community Learning
- County Training
- Enable
- Social Care and Health Training
There are 12 learning centres across the county offering a vast range of opportunities to anyone wanting to learn new skills for work, personal, recreational or career development.
Adult and Community Learning
Adult and Community Learning provides a wide range of day and evening classes as well as midweek, weekend and holiday courses. Whatever your age or background, everyone is welcome to take part in lifelong learning, developing key skills and gaining new experiences.
Services include:
- Family Learning – courses and workshops where parents and children can learn together. The focus of many courses is the understanding and development of language, the importance of play and learning at school. Accredited literacy and numeracy qualifications are also provided.
- Adult and Community Education - part time recreational and leisure courses including:
- computing
- creative and performing arts
- health fitness
- languages, literature and culture
- local interest
- Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities - courses set up to meet the needs and interests of local people, to help improve their skills and re-engage them in learning
County Training
- Vocational training and work experience for 14-16 year old school pupils who require an alternative curriculum.
- Apprenticeships – training and assessment for 16 – 24 year olds working towards apprenticeship frameworks including NVQs level 2 and 3, in the following areas:
- Business Administration
- Children's Care, Learning and Development
- Customer Service
- Distribution, Storage and Warehousing
- Hairdressing and Barbering level 2
- Health and Social Care
- Hospitality and Catering
- IT Practitioner and Professional
- ITQ
- Management level 3
- Playwork
- Sales and Telesales level 2
- Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
- Team Leading level 2
- Entry to employment (e2e) – assisting 16-18 year olds progress into employment, an apprenticeship or college. The programme provides work experience, skills, qualifications and personal development.
- Employability and Disability service - assisting unemployed individual gain sustained employment through a range of interventions including Job search, Vocational training, basic skills support, and work experience placements
- Learndirect – online and CD based courses, delivered within training centres or via remote learning
- Business Services - delivering government funded contracts and commercial training and assessment to Shropshire employers to satisfy the identified shortfalls within regional workforces, across a wide range of areas:
- health and safety
- first aid, NVQs
- management
- learning and development
- essential skills - literacy and numeracy
- bespoke short courses
Enable - Employment help and support for people with disabilities
Enable is a supported employment service for people with disabilities in Shropshire. It was started in 1996 as a specialist mental health service and has since expanded to offer a service to people with other disabilities. The primary services offered by Enable include:
- learning disabilities service
- mental health service
- job retention
- workstep
Social Care and Health Training
Social Care and Health Training work with a range of partners to provide training and workforce planning for Shropshire’s Social Care and Health workforce to meet Government targets and National Minimum Standards for Care.
- Joint Training with Health for staff working in Adult Community Services
- Professional Development for people wishing to gain a degree in social work or Occupational Therapy, post graduate training, management development and Social Work Student placements
- NVQ Assessment and Training for the Social Care and Health Sector at Induction, Levels 2, 3 and 4
- Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) for Care to support increased skills training and qualifications for the local social care and health sector
