Progress with The Flaxmill

The Architect for Bradley, Fielden, Clegg was unable to attend the meeting so Cllr Moseley delivered the PowerPoint presentation which provided the residents with a flavour of what the plans are for the Flaxmill.

The presentation covered the following issues related to the site: History, Biodiversity, Industrial Heritage, Sustainable Communities, a Place for People, Green Landscape, Legible Landscape and the Canal.

It was hoped that the building would be used to bring the community together and help raise the profile of the area. The timeframe for completion of the scheme would be around 2012, although it was accepted that due to the current economic climate this was an optimistic timescale.

Young People’s Issues

Dorothy Jones, Play Development Officer, gave an update on local provision for the 5 – 12 year age group in the area. This involved the ‘Reccy Ranger’ mobile play facility, that provide up to 2 hours of free play sessions at various locations across Shrewsbury, including after school sessions at the Martin Wilson and St Marys Catholic School in Castlefields.

The Reccy Ranger project develops informal leisure opportunities for children and young people. Activities are based on the needs of the young people themselves with emphasis on ‘active’ play, particularly during the summer months. The service is primarily aimed at children & young people from 5 to 16 years although younger and older children can join in, parents area also encourage parents to stay and play.

Anyone wishing to use this service should contact Sean McCarthy, Sports Development Officer on 01743 255933.
