Discount and exemptions review 2019

28 February 2019 Last updated at 05:33

Each year, we are legally obliged to reasonably review discounts, disregards, reductions and exemptions to ensure they continue to be correctly applied. If you currently claim one of these you will be receiving a review from us over the coming year. Please be advised that a reply paid envelope is not provided with any review form in order for us to keep costs to a minimum.

Thank you for your continued co-operation in these matters.

If you have any questions regarding the form, below is a list of frequently asked questions for further information...

Why have I been sent this letter?

We're reviewing the circumstances of people who are claiming a discount, disregard, reduction or exemption. We require you to notify us of your current circumstances relating to this.

How do I complete the form?

Please complete the form as soon as you can after you have received it, remembering to return with any supporting evidence that the form asks you for. Fill in all sections that are applicable to you/your circumstances then sign and return the form to us. A legible copy of the completed and signed form can be emailed to council.tax@shropshire.gov.uk

Alternatively, you can return via post to: Shropshire Council, Revenues and Benefits, PO Box 4749, Shrewsbury, SY1 9GH

What happens if I don’t complete the form?

We'll assume that your situation has changed and will remove your discount, disregard, reduction or exemption with effect from 1 April or the date the discount commenced if later. You'll receive a new council tax bill as confirmation that it has been removed, advising the amount of your new instalments

What credit information do you hold on me?

We don’t hold any credit information on you. If you want to see your credit file please contact any of the major credit reference agencies.

What happens if the form is returned after the 14-day deadline given?

If the form isn’t returned on time, you could receive a reminder from us. As long as the completed form (or completed reminder) is returned within the specified time on the reminder, your discount, disregard, reduction or exemption won't be removed (unless the changes or circumstances you provide on the form or reminder mean you are no longer entitled to it).

What should I do if someone is using my address for correspondence only?

Include their name and full residential address so the matter can be looked into further. This may mean that we'll need to contact you for further information, so please ensure all contact details are provided.

I've already informed you of a change in circumstances. Do I need to complete the form?

Yes, please include all the details of your current situation.

I receive mail for previous occupants, what should I do about this?

You need to write on the envelope that the person no longer lives at the address and return it to the sender.

What should I do if my circumstances are not covered in the examples above?

Take a look at our other web pages about other discount, disregards, reductions or exemptions that may apply. Alternatively email the Revenues Team at council.tax@shropshire.gov.uk explaining your circumstances.

Please note that you'll still be required to complete the review form as requested above.
