In total, 48 elected councillors (or members) serve on Shropshire County Council.

The last Shropshire County Council election was held in May 2005, when the Conservatives won 25 of the 48 seats, and gained control of the Council. The Liberal Democrats won 11 seats, Labour 9 and Independents 3.

Changes since May 2005
Two by-elections were held on 30 November 2006: Joyce Barrow was elected as councillor for Oswestry, and Trevor Davies was elected as councillor for Whittington.

In August 2007 Independent councillor Dilys Gaskill joined the Liberal Democrats, and in September 2007 Independent councillor Yvonne Holyoak joined the Conservatives.

In April 2008, Liberal Democrat councillors Peter Martin and David Gibbon both joined the Conservatives.

And, in a by-election held in June 2008, David Erwin was elected as councillor for Market Drayton.

As a result, the current make-up of the Council is:

  • Conservatives: 28 seats (out of 48)
  • Liberal Democrats: 11 seats
  • Labour: 9 seats
