Sole adult
The full council tax bill assumes that there are two adults living in a dwelling. If only one adult lives in a dwelling (as their main home), the council tax bill will be reduced by 25%. This is more commonly known as a Single Person Discount.
Second homes
If a furnished dwelling is nobody's main home, the council tax bill will be reduced by 10%.
Armed forces personnel and tied accommodation
If a furnished dwelling is nobody's main home because the council tax payer is living elsewhere in armed forces accommodation, or in accommodation in which they are required to reside as a condition of their employment, then the council tax bill will be reduced by 50%.
Unoccupied and unfurnished dwelling
Unoccupied and unfurnished properties will receive a 50% discount following an initial six month exemption period. After 6 months at 50%, full council tax will then be charged.
If a previous owner/occupier of a property has benefited from three months of the exemption, for example, the new owner/occupier would only be entitled to the remaining three months.
