Volunteering at a park or countryside site

volunteers surveying a small stream for signs of water voles

Do you have the occasional day to spare or just the odd hour or two to go for a walk?

Perhaps you like to get your hands dirty, enjoy taking practical action?

Maybe you are the observant type, interested in wildlife, and want to record what you see?

Well, there are many ways you can get involved in volunteering with the Outdoor Recreation Service.

We are always looking for people to become volunteer rangers and help out on one or more of our countryside sites. It can be a way of meeting new people, learning new skills or getting a bit of exercise.

Spread across the county from Whitchurch to Craven Arms, Oswestry to Bridgnorth are numerous countryside sites, for a list and a brief description of some of these sites you may wish to select the link 'Parks and Countryside Sites'.

Volunteer Site Rangers
Could you act as the eyes and ears of the ranger, patrolling countryside sites and talking to visitors, looking out for fallen trees or reporting any unusual wildlife sightings? Perhaps you could become one of our Volunteer Site Rangers.
A form is included on this page as an attachment - 'volunteer ranger questionnaire'. Detach the form, fill it in and attach it to an e-mail or post it to us. Alternatively you can contact us and we will send a paper copy.

Practical Work
If you enjoy spending time in the outdoors and you have some spare time in the week or perhaps the occasional Saturday or Sunday, you could help us carrying out a little practical conservation work such as hedgelaying, scrub clearance, tree planting, keeping sites free of litter, footpath clearance.
If you would like to find out more contact the Community Conservation Officer on 01743 255909 or e-mail parks@shropshire.gov.uk

Regular Volunteering events within the countryside sites

The Mere at Ellesmere - Wednesdays and Fridays 9.30am to 4pm working on sites in the north of Shropshire

Weekend activities
Each quarter we send out a list of weekend conservation tasks and training courses with a variety of organisations around the county. If you would like to receive this then please let us know your e-mail address, if you have one, or your postal address.

We also have several community groups that we work with:-

  • Clive and Grinshill Conservation Group
  • Nesscliffe Volunteer Rangers
  • Llanymynech Llimeys
  • Lyth Hill Residents Association
  • Brown Moss Nature Reserve Users Association

there are also other groups that we help support.
Contact us for more information if you would like to work with others in your area.

Biological surveying
If you have particular skills or interests, perhaps you would like to carry out biological surveys to increase our understanding of the habitats we manage. Please get in touch.

We are supporting the Biodiversity Training Project from the Field studies Council so if you are interested in surveying for wildlife click on the link 'How can I learn to help with Wildlife surveys?'
