Wilfred Owen Green can be accessed from Ambleside Road and Brookhouse Road or from Sainsbury's car park and is near the Railway Museum. See the attached map.
The site is an area of public greenspace with a range of facilities including play equipment and a labyrinth.
The Wilfred Owen Green was officially opened to the public at 4pm on Friday 23rd July 2010
Shaun Burkey, Shropshire Council's project officer, said "This is the day the school summer holidays begin and as the site has been designed to encourage natural imaginative play for children we thought this was as apt a day as any for the official opening."
The re-landscaping of Oswestry’s Town Green had received a major boost with Shropshire Council’s Conservation and Community Officer Shaun Burkey securing a further £90,000 of external funding, bringing the total project budget to £170,000.
Funding for the project to re-landscape the Green came from several sources including Advantage West Midlands and Natural England's Natural Assets Project as well as Play England.
The site has wildflower meadows, trees, improved footpaths and several items of play including a slide and a cantilever swing.
Formal areas blend into more natural features that children can play amongst and that people can enjoy for their nature and wildlife. There is also a small community orchard and new hedges offering colour, and food and shelter for birds.
The 40m diameter labyrinth is a key feature of the site and will be one of the largest in the world. The site's railway history is also reflected with a uniquely designed piece of play equipment in the shape of a train made from logs, also all furniture such as lighting, benches and bins has a traditional railway style.
The Wilfred Owen Association are delighted that the site is dedicated to the memory of the war poet from Oswestry, who ‘had a great love of children and nature’.
Throughout the autumn of 2010 we will be establishing a ‘Friends of the Green’ group to enable local people to have a direct influence on the management, use and future of the site, if you are interested please contact Shaun Burkey, Shropshire Council’s Conservation and Community Officer on 01691 624448 or email shaun.burkey@shropshire.gov.uk.
