A protected landscape
The Shropshire Hills are designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This is a national designation with the purpose of conserving and enhancing the natural beauty of the landscape. There are 41 AONBs in England and Wales and along with National Parks they make up our finest landscapes.

The Shropshire Hills AONB extends from the Wrekin to the Clun Forest and from the Stiperstones across to the Clee Hills. It is a landscape of contrasts with meandering rivers and fertile valleys, rolling pastoral fields and patches of woodland, picturesque villages and historic buildings, hillforts and ancient monuments.

The backdrop to these features are the hills, which tell a fascinating geological story and reveal a thriving industrial past. The diverse wildlife, rich heritage and tranquillity complete the special qualities of the AONB.
