Location

3 miles south-east of Ellesmere. Grid ref. SJ 435328 (to see a map showing the location of Colemere click the link on this page).

Recreational Activities

Excellent circular walk - Reasonably level walking, could be muddy.
Colemere sailing club uses the mere at various times.
The Meres Meander leaflet, showing some local walks, is available for download on this page.

A new family friendly route has been designed at the site and is available for download on this page. (Other family friendly walks are available at other Countryside sites).

One of Shropshire’s most beautiful meres, it is almost completely surrounded by mature woodland with two very attractive hay meadows. The site attracts a variety of wildfowl and waders, including Snipe, Curlew, Goldeneye, and Pochard.

During the spring and summer flowers such as Southern Marsh Orchid, Meadow Cranesbill and Lady’s Smock can be seen in the meadows. Numerous species of insects are attracted to the site including the Brown Hawker dragonfly and Common Blue damselfly.

Because of Colemere's wildlife interest, the site has several designations
  • Local Nature Reserve (LNR)
  • Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
  • RAMSAR site

Please help to protect this special site by not collecting or removing any plants and animals.

If you are visiting this site you may like to look at the attached seasonal notice for more information on what to look out for.

A map of the site is available for download on this page showing routes around the site and points of interest.

Colemere management plan

A management plan for Colemere has been agreed and is now available for you to see. A summary is also available for those who prefer a quick read. If you would like to see the maps associated with this plan please contact us.

Grazing

Grazing in late summer is the best way of managing the flower rich meadows. Rare Breed Herefords are currently grazing so please ensure that if you are walking your dogs you keep them on leads across these fields at all times and ensure that all dog mess is removed (dog bins are on site).

Please note there is no public fishing at Colemere. Fishing rights have been leased to a private fishing club

If you or your organisation would like to hold a public event on this site please contact us.
