Volunteering with the Outdoor Recreation Service

volunteers working at Corbet Wood

Do you have some spare time on your hands midweek or at weekends?

Are you keen to meet new people?

Would you like to be out in the fresh air and get some exercise?

If you can answer yes to one or more of the above, carry on reading to find out more. There are lots of opportunities to become a volunteer with the Outdoor Recreation Service. Follow the links on this page for further information.

Parish Paths Partnership and Parish Warden Scheme

A countywide scheme for those who want to help with their local footpaths and bridleway network. Find out what the schemes are all about and which parishes in Shropshire are included, along with information on how you can get involved and lend a hand.

Tree Wardens

There are opportunities to volunteer as a tree warden in your area/parish. You may not know all the answers but with training and support you will soon learn where to find them. Tree wardens work closely with local communities, farmers and landowners normally within their local parish.

Volunteering at a park

We have opportunities for people to help the rangers at our parks and sites, with a variety of opportunities including carrying out practical conservation work, biological recording and patrolling the sites. There are contact details if you wish to volunteer your services.

Work Experience and placements

We can offer work experience for those with a keen interest in the countryside and conservation issues. There may be opportunities for you to get involved in practical work, surveys, a variety of projects and visitor management. These opportunities are open to a variety of people dependent on their interests.

Wildlifewatch

Based at Ellesmere Visitor Centre, Wildlifewatch is a project managed and manned by volunteers with support from the Outdoor Recreation Service. It performs a vital service by monitoring the numbers of herons breeding on the mere as well as helping the public to view nest sites and other wildlife in the area. The project runs all year round, you could get involved with undertaking nest surveys, meeting and greeting visitors or even helping to run the project.

Walking for Health

Walking for Health is a national initiative to encourage people who have taken little exercise in the past, or have health problems, to take up walking as a way of improving their health.

Visit the Walking for Health link on this page to find out more about ways of staying physically active and volunteering as a walks leader.

If you are interested in more information on conservation and volunteering take a look at the muckin4life website.
