In summer of 2008, the countryside access team launched the Parish Path Warden (PPW) Scheme. The scheme complements Parish Paths Partnership (P3) Groups and initially Parish Action Project parishes without P3 Group were targeted. Letters and information leaflets were sent out to these 67 parishes in May 2008 and PPW’s were nominated by their Parish or Town Councils. An induction day was held in September and 20 PPW’s have signed up for the scheme.
The scheme was being run as a pilot for the first year and due to the success has now been rolled out County wide. There are now some 25 wardens covering 23 parishes. One of the initial wardens has already progressed and formed a full P3 group.
The main purpose of PPW’s, like P3 groups, is to provide a vital link between local communities and the Council. The wardens will act as our eyes and ears in a parish, annually inspecting the rights of way network, reporting problems found and finding out landowner details. PPW’s will also conduct minor clearance around stiles and gates together with way marking. Each individual warden will have a nominated member of staff as a contact.
The PPW and P3 scheme are designed to be complementary. Targeting non P3 parishes enables individual volunteers with countryside access interests to help the Countryside Access Team. If interest within a parish grows and more people volunteer then the warden scheme could develop into a P3 group.
