Play development

adventurous play equipment including a wooden fort located against a steep grass bank

Shropshire Council's Outdoor Recreation team realise that play is essential for children’s healthy development and well-being. The team is responsible for 42 play areas throughout the County which are all inspected visually on a daily basis.

In addition to this all equipment is tested fortnightly for any maintenance requirements. Finally, an annual RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) inspection is carried out on all of our play areas to ensure that every piece of equipment meets current requirements and standards.

For more information please follow the Shropshire Council Play Spaces link on this page.

Bridgnorth Community Play Store

If you are a community or not for profit organisation in Bridgnorth District wanting to provide opportunities for play in your local community through events such as the summer play scheme, then please follow The Community Play Store link on this page.

Big Lottery play programme

Since 2006, District Councils had individually been offered £200,000 funding to provide increased play provision for their communities. Each District had allocated the money differently with some focusing on providing play areas and others focusing on providing play schemes. Many have mixed the two types and developed a 3 year programme that provides maximum play opportunities for their areas. For more information on the individual Big Lottery projects, please refer to the strategy documents and the Big Lottery Fund children's play programme link on this page.

Playbuilder Programme

Funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) the Shropshire Council Playbuilder Programme began in 2009 as a two year project which aimed to produce 22 play areas throughout the County. We completed 11 new play areas in year 1.

In July 2010 all current Year 2 Playbuilder developments were cancelled following the Department of Education decision to cease the scheme's funding as part of overall budget cuts. However in October of 2010 we received £371,000 from the Playbuilder funding and this has enabled us to develop a further 12 projects across the county in year 2.

For more information click the Playbuilder Project link on this page.
