Volunteering as a tree warden

tree wardens enjoying a guided walk at the West Midlands Tree Warden Forum

Tree wardens don't need to be experts, only enthusiasts.

The amount of time you give to the role is dependant on your enthusiasm and commitment. After all you are a volunteer!

There are lots of opportunities to get training and support. You may not know all the answers, but you will soon learn where to find them. Tree wardens work closely with local communities, farmers and landowners, normally within their local parish.

Among the tasks wardens have become involved in are:

  • Gathering information about local trees and carrying out surveys
  • Encouraging local projects concerning trees and woods
  • Arranging a supply of trees for local projects (often via a free tree scheme)
  • Local liaison, offering help and advice when necessary
  • Informing the local authority of threats to local trees
  • Attending training events and conferences

If you live anywhere in Shropshire, here's your chance to get even more involved with promoting national campaigns at a local level. Follow the link to 'Trees in the Shropshire Landscape'.

One of the things that captures everyone's imagination is veteran trees. If you would like to find out more click the link to our veteran tree page.

The National Grid Tree Warden scheme was launched in September 1990 and provides an excellent opportunity for people to play an active role in conserving and enhancing their local trees and woods. The Tree Council has been working closely with local authorities to set up tree warden networks throughout the UK. By the end of 2000, there were over 7,000 tree wardens.
