What is happening in SEN (plus Inclusion) ....

SEN courses offered in the brochure are continuing to focus on four aspects of SEN work:

• awareness raising of the difficulties experienced by pupils with various low incidence disorders, together with classroom strategies to help them access the curriculum
• the development of SENCos, particularly those who are new to the role, within the context of a changing emphasis for their work in school.
• behaviour management
• inclusion.

In addition to courses advertised here, training will be offered in response to the national initiatives associated with the primary and secondary national strategies and the Disability Discrimination Act, as information becomes available.

Primary SENCo Network Meetings
Subject network meetings will include:

• an update on national, local and regional developments in the subject
• professional development in a topical subject-related issue
• sharing of effective practice with colleagues from other schools.

Autumn Term 2008

SEN in Foundation & Year 1
This session will provide a brief overview of SEN in the early years. It will consider some of the difficulties faced by children and some general strategies for helping them to progress.

Autistic Spectrum Disorders Awareness
This session will provide a brief introduction to Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It will consider the characteristics displayed by a pupil with ASD, their implications for the classroom and general strategies for aiding their progress.

Practical Confrontation Avoidance Techniques - Keeping Everyone Safe
Participants will establish clear guidelines as to how to deal effectively with a wide range of situations which may be realistically portrayed, so that 'safe' outcomes are achieved for all. Staff will also look at strategies to develop 'safe' practice with pupils, in these days of physical confrontation, litigation and allegations.

Spring Term 2009

SEN in Foundation & Year 1

Inclusion: Providing Effective Learning Opportunities for All Pupils
An introduction to the principles of inclusion and their implications for learning and teaching.

Multi-Sensory Teaching & Learning
There are visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners and it is important that teachers vary their teaching style to ensure that all types of learner are included within their lessons. The course will look at ways of recognising each type of learner and explore methods of teaching mathematics and literacy which will ensure the inclusion of all pupils, whatever their preferred learning style.

Dyslexia Awareness
This session will provide a brief introduction to the specific learning difficulty, dyslexia. It will consider the characteristics displayed by a pupil with dyslexia, their implications for the classroom and general strategies for aiding their progress.

Dyscalculia - A Specific Learning Difficulty in Mathematics
A theoretical background to Dyscalculia and a consideration of learning styles/teaching strategies.

Dyspraxia Awareness
Considers characteristics displayed by a pupil with Dyspraxia, their implications for the classroom and general strategies for aiding their progress.

Managing Complex Behaviour Difficulties in Mainstream Schools
Considering real situations and difficulties and how they can be managed practically. The needs of the child, those around them, other pupils and the school as a whole are considered.

Effective Pastoral Support Plans
The course will focus on collating and recording appropriate information to formulate effective Pastoral Support Plans (PSPs) and evaluate their progress using a manageable evidence base. It is a course based on reality and experience of what works.

Summer Term 2009

SENCo Update for SENCos in Small Schools
The morning session will repeat the content of the autumn and spring term SENCo Updates, with an emphasis on how this may be put into practice in small schools. The afternoon will be the scheduled SENCo Update for the summer term. A resource exhibition will be available throughout the day.
