Target audience

NQTs, teachers in the early years of their careers, experienced teachers, new and experienced leaders and managers.

Course content

This course is intended for teachers who would like to develop their teaching skills to support the learning of more able students at Key Stage 3. It consists of two half-days the first of which will explore teaching strategies and set up the gap task. The second half-day will be used to review the gap task and draw out key points.

Intended outcomes

  • Support teachers in using data to identify and target more able students in the classroom
  • Improve understanding of progression and using National Curriculum levels to support challenge of more able students
  • Improved understanding and confidence in teaching students and applying appropriate teaching strategies for more able students
  • Improved ability to use greater variety of assessment strategies.

Day 1

Session 1 - using data to support identification of students
Session 2 - continuity and progression using National Curriculum levels
Session 3 - teaching and learning strategies to challenge and extend
Session 4 - setting up the gap task

Day 2

Session 1 - assessing pupil progress and evidence of impact
Session 2 - sharing what works well
Session 3 - ways forward to develop practice in school.
