Target audience

NQTs, teachers in the early years of their careers, experienced teachers, teaching assistants, support staff.

Course content

This three part cross-phase course will consider approaches to the explicit teaching of speaking and listening skills.

The issues and activities explored will be relevant to literacy and English teachers and subject leaders in Key Stages 2, 3 and 4, and to cross-curricular literacy co-ordinators.

Gap tasks will be set to allow action research in the classroom and the sharing of good practice between primary and secondary colleagues.

Intended outcomes

  • Awareness of a range of classroom strategies to promote pupil progression in speaking and listening skills
  • Understanding of the assessment of speaking and listening, including assessment for learning strategies
  • Insight into the ways in which the development of speaking and listening skills can enhance reading and writing.

Programme

The programme will include:

  • sharing good practice
  • practical activities for the classroom
  • assessment.
