Course content

Safer recruitment in relation to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and an overview of
recruitment and selection procedures.

Intended outcomes

  • An awareness and understanding of offender behaviour
  • Understanding of the key features of staff recruitment that help deter or prevent the appointment of unsuitable people
  • Raised awareness of policies and practices that minimise opportunities for abuse or ensure that its prompt reporting can be put in place
  • The knowledge to undertake a review of the school's policies and practices with a view to making them safer.

Programme

The programme will include:

  • how safer recruitment fits within the wider context of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and the Every Child Matters agenda
  • the importance of planning and carrying out a recruitment exercise
  • how to make the right decisions using interviews and pre-employment checks
  • the importance of ongoing awareness and vigilance and creating an environment to deter and prevent abuse and challenge inappropriate behaviour.

There will also be an overview of the Model Recruitment and Selection Code of Practice.
