Course content

Addresses the knowledge and skills required to enable pupils with English as an additional language (EAL) to achieve their full potential across the secondary curriculum, with particular emphasis on pupils newly arrived from overseas.

Intended outcomes

Participants will:

  • have improved information and awareness of issues surrounding the induction of pupils newly arrived from overseas, including assessment procedures
  • have greater understanding of the impact of EAL on learning for pupils at both early and more advanced stages
  • employ teaching strategies that will enhance the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing across the curriculum
  • gain knowledge of resources available for supporting access to the curriculum for pupils with EAL.
