Target audience

Subject leaders, key stage co-ordinators, class teachers and teaching assistants.

Course content

The requirement to teach 'How Science Works' at Key Stage 4, together with changes to the programme of study at Key Stage 3, have necessitated that teachers review the way they teach science. At the same time there has been a lot of research into the effective deployment of thinking skills in science learning. This course will look at what teachers can do to assist students' thinking and learning in the science classroom.

Intended outcomes

Participants will:

  • have improved knowledge and understanding of research into thinking skills and science learning
  • have improved understanding of how thinking skills can be used in the science classroom
  • have improved understanding of strategies which can be used to improve students' learning of 'How Science Works'.

Five Outcomes: Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Make a Positive Contribution, Achieve Economic Well Being

Programme

The programme will include:

Session 1 - research into thinking skills and science learning
Session 2 - using thinking skills in the science classroom
Session 3 - incorporating thinking skills into 'How Science Works'
Session 4 - next steps.

We aim to put finalised course programmes on the website two weeks ahead of the course date.
