Local democracy

In Shropshire there is a three-tier system of democracy. Countywide, democracy and services are delivered by Shropshire County Council; at a district/borough level by the five district/borough councils, and locally by the local (formerly parish/town) councils.

Each of these councils is governed by councillors (otherwise called elected members) who have been elected by local people.

Services provided by Shropshire County Council include:

  • Children & Young People's Services including education, childcare, children and families, sport
  • Community Services including libraries, museums, countryside, older people, health, disabilities, adult education
  • Economy & Environment including highways, transport, planning, economic development, waste, trading standards

Services provided by district/borough councils include:

  • refuse collection
  • environmental health
  • leisure
  • planning & development control
  • licences
  • housing benefit

Local Councils (formerly known as parish/town councils) provide very local services in the immediate area for example:

  • bus shelters
  • play areas
  • markets
  • cutting grass verges
