In Shropshire the Council and the Primary Care Trust have created a joint team to co-ordinate and to carry out assessments for DoLS. Representatives of both organisations also meet to approve or refuse authorisation requests.
All applications whether they come from care homes or hospitals are received by the Joint DoLS team (which is Shropshire's supervisory body.)
The team consists of
- a System Co-ordinator
- two Best Interests Assessors
- an administrator
- the Mental Capacity Act and DoLS Manager
There are also several Best Interest Assessors placed in social work teams, hospitals and PCT teams.
Together this team carry out all the requirements of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards to ensure vulnerable people are protected when in hospital or a care home.
