Mears, Shropshire Home Services is a locally based home improvement agency, working in partnership with Shropshire Council
Who can we help?
We can help you if you need repairs, improvements or adaptations to your property, particularly if you are older and/or disabled, enabling you to ‘stay put’ in the community in comfort and safety. We offer confidential advice, support and assistance. Unfortunately we cannot help housing association or council tenants.
How does Mears, Shropshire Home Services work?
We will visit you at home to discuss your needs and help you find the right solution. If Mears, Shropshire Home Services is the answer we will help you decide exactly what work should be done and arrange for drawings and schedules of work.
We will help get prices, advise on reliable contractors and inspect the works on site. As well as the technical side we will also help you deal with any disruption during the work. If Mears, Shropshire Home Services is not the answer for you, we will try our best to put you in touch with the right people.
What sort of work can we do?
Mears, Shropshire Home Services can often help with:
- internal bathroom arrangements
- electrical rewiring
- damp and timber remedial works
- doors and windows repairs/replacement
- roof repairs/re-roofing
- adaptations for people with disabilities
Paying for the work
Mears, Shropshire Home Services will be happy to help you get information on the different ways of paying for the work.
Grants
Some of our customers receive grants. The availability of home improvement grants will vary from one property to another, even within a local authority. We can advise you on your entitlement to any financial help.
We can help you to fill in forms and will keep you informed of any progress.
Benevolent Funding
If you do not qualify for a local authority grant it may be possible to seek funding from a charitable organisation or benevolent fund - for example, you may have been a member of a trade union who could assist you with funding. We will approach charities on your behalf, and assist you with completing the application forms.
Savings / Loans
Some customers opt to pay for work from their savings. Others may wish to consider a loan. We can help you to get information from banks and building societies on loans that may be appropriate for your needs.
Equity Release
Some customers opt to release some of the value in their home to finance repairs and home improvements. By improving your home, you can increase the value by more than the amount you released via equity release. You should always contact an independent financial advisor to discuss what type of equity release would suit your circumstances and home best.
Social Care benefits
We can advise you on Social Security and disability benefits and will assist you to find specialist advice, should you need it.
Handyperson Service
It is often difficult and expensive to call someone out for smaller jobs like fitting a plug, hanging a curtain rail, fixing a tap or installing a grab rail. Our small repairs service can help you carry out small routine jobs that you may be unable to do yourself.
Is there a charge for this work?
There is a charge of £15 per hour plus VAT for labour. You will also have to pay the cost of materials (inclusive of VAT) required to carry out the work.
Our 'Safe at Home' scheme offers a free survey of your property to check out any hidden dangers and keep you safe from trips or falls, safe from burglary, from fire, keep you warm and comfortable and help you maintain your home.
You can contact the Handyperson Service on telephone: 01743 458347.
