Aims of our Special Interest Group
- promote ourselves as a resource for access and support
- increase exchange of ideas between agencies
- increase training events across agencies and client groups
- improve services for parents with learning disabilities
- provide a professional support network and case discussion
- share resources
Where did we come from?
In November 2007, the Joint Training Team were requested to run a workshop for learning disability services and children's services. Areas we explored were:
- looking at national statistics
- discussing local criteria
- looking at the benefits of co-working between services for parents and children
- looking at good practice in relation to parents with learning disabilities and children's needs
Where are we now?
Members of the group, who are from learning disability services, Primary Care Trust, and children's services are meeting every three months to explore local ideas to take forward to support parents with learning disabilities and their children. We are looking at:
- training awareness and the importance of family group conferencing
- awareness of learning disability to direct care staff in the children's sector
- linking with parents with learning disabilities and their experiences
- how we can work together and support each other as professionals
- a key area to share ideas and resources
