Substance misuse

The Shropshire Community Substance Misuse Team (CSMT) offers a range of services to people who are having problems with their drug and/or alcohol use.

The team also offers support to the family and friends of people who are seeking help.

We encourage people to refer themselves for treatment. But we also take referrals from family members and from professionals such as doctors and social workers.

We do not ask for a commitment to abstinence before we will work with you. We aim to help you make informed choices and to minimise harm.

What services do the Community Substance Misuse Team offer?

Substance Misuse Assessments - An opportunity to talk through your problem and to find out how we may be able to help you. Please allow up to an hour for this first appointment.

Counselling - For those who want to look at the underlying reasons for their substance misuse and make positive changes.

Detoxification - We can arrange a referral for in-patient detoxification at a specialist unit. Home detoxification is also available after assessment.

Substitute Prescribing - For those looking to stabilise and reduce their drug use with the aim of becoming drug free.

Needle Exchange - For those injecting drugs our needle exchange at St Michael’s House can offer sterile needles, syringes, citric acid, sharp boxes, injecting and related health advice.

Advice and Information - Leaflets for general health advice; drugs and alcohol information; safe injecting; sexual health. You can speak to a member of the team on any of these issues or other matters that may be worrying you.

Residential Rehabilitation - If you can't deal with your problems in the community, we can talk to you about staying at a residential rehabilitation unit. These units offer programmes of specialist therapy and care lasting 6 to 12 months.

Probation Clinic - This is a clinic which offers support for people who have a drug problem and are on probation or who have recently left prison.

Midwife Service - For users who are pregnant.
Group work – a supportive environment with people who share a common experience, led by team workers with experience and training in group work.
