The Young People's Substance Misuse Team assess needs, provide one-to-one support such as counselling and identifies which treatments will be most effective in helping young people (aged up to 19 years old) to reduce the harmful effects of substances and to maintain a positive and healthy lifestyle.
The team covers all areas of Shropshire. Although the team is based in Shrewsbury, workers travel to meet young people in their own area. The team recognises the importance of confidentiality and also ensures young people give their consent before a referral can be accepted. Whenever possible the team does its best to meet each young person within two weeks of their referral.
Services provided by the team include:
- Information - leaflets, posters and other forms of information about drugs and alcohol.
- Advice - talking about the risks of drug and alcohol use and reducing the risks from substances.
- Counselling - talking about lifestyles and problems with drugs and alcohol.
- Medical treatment - referral for substitute prescribing for heroin dependency and detoxification from drugs or alcohol.
The Young People's Substance Misuse Team can be contacted from Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm and Fridays from 9am to 4pm or by writing to the contact address on this page:
