Local grants

The links on this page take you to information on the following grant schemes, available exclusively to organisations and businesses in Shropshire:

Shropshire Business Enterprise Fund

Shropshire Council runs this popular fund in response to the current difficulties faced by businesses in obtaining finance and to counter the impact of the recession in Shropshire.

The fund covers three areas of investment, including business start ups, growing businesses and retail premises. Please follow the link at the bottom of the page for details.

Grassroots

Funding is for small organisations in Shropshire with an average turnover of £20,000 per annum over the last three years and the focus for it is on helping small groups grow and become more sustainable.

The maximum grant is £5,000, which can be paid as one lump sum or up to three small grants over three years. Funding can be capital or revenue and both new and existing work are eligible.

The programme officially opened on the 15 August 2008 and the application form and guidance are available via the link on this page. Alternatively, call 01743 360641 for information.

The next round of funding is yet to be confirmed.

Shropshire Community Fund

This fund supports local charities in the county. It may help with:

  • Start-up costs of newly formed groups or support for new developments of existing groups.
  • Training costs for volunteers and staff.
  • Small capital grants for equipment.
  • General revenue costs for social welfare groups, where no staff are employed.

These could be for a maximum of three consecutive years in any five-year period.

Grants are limited to a maximum of £750, where this figure will only be exceeded in exceptional circumstances.

Applications can be made at any time.

Morgan Foundation

This foundation supports charities across North Wales, Merseyside, West Cheshire and North Shropshire (including Oswestry). It aims to provide organisations supporting children and families with a helping hand, to expand their work and increase their effectiveness.

The type, size and time period of a grant is decided on the basis of the perceived 'difference' that the Foundation's support will make to the organisation, to the project and to the targeted beneficiaries. The Foundation awards grants totalling approximately £1m each year.

Landfill / Aggregates Community Funds

Parts of Shropshire benefit from Landfill and/or Aggregate Extraction Funds, which companies contribute towards as part of a tax relief scheme.

There are two main funds that apply to Shropshire.

The Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund is managed locally by Shropshire Council. It is open to community groups for projects that “compensate communities for the effects of aggregates extraction”.

Veolia has the contract to manage Shropshire’s waste, which means that its trust fund covers a number of areas within Shropshire, including Shrewsbury, Whitchurch, Craven Arms and Bridgnorth.

The fund supports a range of projects, including those relating to the environment, community and heritage.
