Healthy Eating Award for Morda CE Primary School

Staff and children at Morda CE Primary School in Oswestry are celebrating after the school was awarded the platinum Shropshire Healthy Eating Award.

The award will be presented to the school this Friday (3 July) by David Roberts, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for local environment and economy.

The Shropshire Healthy Eating Award (SHEA) aims to encourage restaurants, cafes, schools and other food establishments to offer healthy options on their menus.

The Award scheme is delivered by Shropshire Council in partnership with Shropshire County Primary Care Trust and is open to all caterers in the county.

Under the scheme, premises can receive one of four different levels of award: bronze, silver, gold or platinum.
The Shropshire Healthy Eating Award is given to premises that satisfy the following criteria:
· Provision and promotion of healthy food choices.
· No smoking within the premises.
· Good standards of food hygiene.
· Staff trained in respect of food hygiene.
· Breastfeeding friendly (gold and platinum award only).

Schemes displaying a platinum award must have a menu consisting of at least 75 per cent healthy options.

Councillor Roberts said: “I would like to congratulate all at Morda primary school on achieving this award. It is deserved recognition of their hard work to ensure that healthy food is served in a safe and clean environment by well-trained staff. Parents really can be certain that their children’s food is being provided by one of the finest caterers in Shropshire.”

Bronwen Williams, cook at Morda CE Primary School, said: “We are delighted to receive the highest level award in the scheme. It is a testament to the contributions made by all at the school and by Shropshire Council's school meals service."

Winning the Shropshire Healthy Eating Award offers numerous benefits including public recognition through an easily recognisable window sticker and official certificate, as well as local promotional opportunities.

Any local caterers interested in becoming part of the scheme can contact the SHEA Co-ordinator on 01743 261300 ext 2738.
