The Annual Population Survey (APS) which replaces the Labour Force Survey (LFS) is the largest regular household survey in the United Kingdom. The APS asks a series of questions about respondents’ personal circumstances and their labour market activity. APS data results are grossed so that the results are representative of the UK population.

The latest figures for Shropshire show that between July 2006 and June 2007 there were:

  • 136,100 people in employment, of which 76,100 were men and 60,000 women
  • 94,300 (72.0%) people worked full-time and 36,700 (28.0%) worked part-time
  • 112,200 people are employees whereas 22,300 are self-employed, 16.4% of the total employed

The figures are based on people living in Shropshire, therefore those residents in employment may work in the county or elsewhere.
