
The Annual Survey of Hours and Income (ASHE) has been introduced by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) to replace the New Earnings Survey (NES). The survey gathers information on the levels, distribution and make-up of earnings of employees in all industries and occupations in Great Britain.
In 2009, the median weekly wage for the United Kingdom was £488.70. The Isles of Scilly had the lowest total wages in England at £257.40. The highest wages, £912.70 per week, are found in the city of London.
- The total median weekly earnings in Shropshire were £406.40.
- Female wages were 80.0% of male wages, a similar rate to the figure nationally. This figure has reduced since 2006, when female wages in Shropshire were 85% of male wages.
- Median full time weekly hours for males (excluding overtime) were 39.0 hours.
- Median full time weekly hours for females (excluding overtime) were 37.0 hours.
In accordance with the Office of National Statistics (ONS), the gross weekly earnings figures given are median averages, not mean averages as used in the previous New Earnings Survey.
