Most children under 5 years of age in need of foster care only stay for a short time but they do demand great skill and commitment from foster carers. Younger children can easily become confused trying to cope with separation from familiar people, surroundings and routines and may not be able to tell you want they want.
Consistency in the child’s life is important and knowing in advance about food, sleeping habits, favourite toys etc can take some of the hard work out of helping the child to settle. It is important for the child to keep familiar things and it is not the time to introduce new habits.
Links with the child’s parents, social worker and health visitor are vital. The aim will usually be to return the child to its parents as soon as possible and it is important that the parents are involved in decisions that affect the daily routine, progress, general health and welfare of the child.
Young children show different reactions to new situations. Some will be friendly and outgoing but many who come to be fostered come from homes where difficulties have made them unhappy. Some may become very quiet and reluctant to eat or be touched or comforted. Others may roar in protest at being left in a strange place with strange people. You should find that over a period of time your care and reassurance will give the child confidence and you will notice an improvement.
Play is important to young children and provides a way of becoming involved with the child and offers opportunities for them to communicate with you. If the child already goes to a nursery or play group, your social worker will discuss with you whether it is appropriate for them to continue to attend.
You will need to be aware of any vaccinations the child has had or needs and illnesses past and present. Coping with minor ailments is all part of fostering. Serious problems should be discussed with your social worker.
