Governors with responsibility for SEN/Inclusion
Course content
This course will give those new to being governor for SEN, a basic knowledge of the legislation and procedures which dictate SEN practice in schools.
Intended outcomes
Participants will:
- have a basic knowledge of the SEN Code of Practice
- know what the SEN policy should contain
- understand the requirements of the SEN self-review
- understand how to monitor the effectiveness of SEN arrangements in their own schools
- understand the importance of their role.

Programme
The programme will include:
- the SEN Code of Practice: the principles for the Code, the graduated approach, IEPs
- the SEN Policy: linking the Code to practice in school, what an effective policy should contain
- the SEN self-review: why do we need it? how is it carried out? what does it look like?
- monitoring effectiveness: building links with the SENCo, the right questions to ask
- the governors role: supporting the SENCo, supporting parents.
