Anyone over the age of 18 can become a governor providing that they are not the subject of a bankruptcy order or have been convicted of certain criminal offences. A full list of disqualification rules can be accessed by following the link on this page. As part of the appointment process governors are asked to confirm that they do not fall foul of these rules and a check is run to ensure that they don't appear on List 99 which is a list of persons deemed unsuitable to work with children and young people.
There is no limit to the number of governing bodies an individual can serve on, however before committing too heavily, governors must consider the amount of time they have to devote to governorship.
