Course content

The course considers the role of committees and the importance of clear terms of reference, effective meetings, and clear and accurate minute-taking, suggesting ways these things can be achieved.

Intended outcomes
Governors will:

  • Understand what can, and cannot, be delegated to committees
  • discuss ways of making their committees and committee meetings more effective
  • consider how the clerk can take effective minutes to report back to all members of the governing body.

Programme

The programme will include the following:

  • information about the requirements of FMSiS (Financial Management Standard in Schools) concerning the minutes of meetings
  • a reminder of the governing body's role in supporting school improvement
  • how the effective use of committees helps to fulfil this role
  • the importance of scheduling the work of the committees in advance
  • suggestions for effective reporting-back procedures, to enable the governing body to be involved in school development planning from a wider knowledge base, thus playing its part in school improvement
  • consideration of some case-studies, and how these could be effectively minuted.
