Course content
The course considers the role of committees and the importance of clear terms of reference, effective meetings, and clear and accurate minute-taking, suggesting ways these things can be achieved.
Intended outcomes
Governors will:
- Understand what can, and cannot, be delegated to committees
- discuss ways of making their committees and committee meetings more effective
- consider how the clerk can take effective minutes to report back to all members of the governing body.

Programme
The programme will include the following:
- information about the requirements of FMSiS (Financial Management Standard in Schools) concerning the minutes of meetings
- a reminder of the governing body's role in supporting school improvement
- how the effective use of committees helps to fulfil this role
- the importance of scheduling the work of the committees in advance
- suggestions for effective reporting-back procedures, to enable the governing body to be involved in school development planning from a wider knowledge base, thus playing its part in school improvement
- consideration of some case-studies, and how these could be effectively minuted.
