Course content
This training day is designed for recently appointed governors as an introduction to the roles and responsibilities of school governors. Recently produced DCSF materials are used.
Intended outcomes
An understanding of:
- the characteristics of effective schools
- the key roles and responsibilities of governing bodies in improving schools
- the different and complementary roles of governors and headteachers
- how to be effective on their own governing bodies
- the importance of sound working relationships with all staff, parents, local authority, Diocesan
Boards and local communities.

- powers and duties of governing bodies
- School Development Plans
- effective schools
The governing body as a critical friend:
- monitoring and evaluation
- visits to schools
- delegation and meetings
Ensuring accountability:
- accountability of headteachers to governors
- accountability of governors.
