Know your rights...
If you are homeless or threatened with eviction, you may have legal rights to stay in or return to your home. Apart from being entitled to help from the council, you may also be entitled to help from Social Care.
Groups of people have slightly different rights, these are: young people under 18, people who may have lived abroad and asylum seekers. Depending on which category you fall into will determine what rights you have. You can visit Shelter's website to find out how to get help.
Social Care sometimes has a duty to help certain groups of people who become homeless. These groups include:
- some young people aged under 18
- people who have been in care (normally up to the age of 21 although it can be up to your 24th birthday if you are still in full time education)
- people with disabilities
- people with mental health problems
- older people
Shropshire Council may be able to help families with children but they are not legally obliged to provide accommodation where everyone can live together. If you are in this situation or have problems getting help from social care, get independent advice.
