If you do become homeless or are likely to become homeless within 28 days, your Council's legal obligations to you will depend upon your personal circumstances and the reasons why you became homeless.

The 1996 Housing Act, Part VII (as amended by the 2002 Homelessness Act) sets out the legal duties that all local authorities have towards people who are homeless.
Councils have a legal duty to make sure you have somewhere to live if:
- you are homeless, and
- you are eligible, and
- you have a priority need, and
- you are not intentionally homeless and
- you have a local connection with the district
