The Council provides a wide range of assistance for people with disabilities to adapt their home, from small pieces of equipment to purpose built extensions.
If you are a disabled person, an adaptation to your home can help to give you more freedom, and make it easier to access facilities within it. Adaptations usually mean structural changes are needed to your home such as:
- replacing a bath with a walk in shower or fitting an over-bath shower
- adapting your home for wheelchair use (e.g. widening doors, installing a ramp)
Other equipment
You might also benefit from electronic equipment, for example sensors that can detect when a person has fallen. For further information about this type of assistive technology follow the links on this page.
How do I get equipment and major adaptations?
To obtain an adaptation you must first be referred or refer yourself to our Social Care Team for an assessment of your needs. For more information on how to do this or how to get equipment follow the links on this page.
Disabled Facilities Grant
If your assessment recommends that you require an adaptation, you may be entitled to a grant to fund it. If you think that you would benefit from one of these grants and need more information at this stage, please follow the links on this page. These grants may be means-tested if you apply yourself.
