Council Tenants may have the right to buy their home from the Council at a discount, under the Right to Buy scheme.

Am I eligible?

Have you been a Council, Housing Association or Armed Forces Tenant for a total of at least :

• two years if your tenancy started before 18th January 2005
• five years if your tenancy started on or after 18th January 2005
• if your house or flat is your only, or principal home and is self contained

Exclusions

• if your home is designed or has been adapted for the elderly or disabled
• if you live in sheltered housing where services are provided
• your home is provided as part of your job
• the courts have ordered a possession order for you to leave your home

Purchase price and discount

The property is valued at its open market value, less the value of any improvements you have undertaken.

How much discount you get depends on;

• the number of years you have been a tenant
• if the property is a house or flat

Discount is limited to the maximum amount available for your area.
