Essential road maintenance for Dogpole, Shrewsbury

Shropshire Council recently completed a major refurbishment scheme in Shrewsbury Town Centre which has greatly improved the look of the area.

Part of this work was to surface the carriageway. Unfortunately, in part of Dogpole this surfacing has started to deteriorate due to a failure of the material, meaning it will have to be removed and replaced.

This work will be undertaken entirely at the expense of the council’s contractor, Alun Griffiths and Shropshire Council will incur no costs.

This work is expected to cost in the region of £30,000.

Traffic management arrangements whilst the resurfacing is taking place:

  • In order for the works to take place Dogpole will need to be closed to through traffic from 7pm on the evening of Saturday 18 July to 6am on the morning of Monday 20 July.
  • Castle Gates and Castle Street will become two-way for access purposes only.
  • The one-way traffic order on the bottom of Dogpole will be rescinded allowing residential and business traffic to turn right off Wyle Cop up Dogpole as far as the carriage Works (exiting Dogpole will be as usual).
  • No right turn from Church Street onto Dogpole will be permitted. As a result, lengthy waits entering and exiting Church Street may be experienced.
  • A comprehensive diversion route will be in place to direct motorists around the town.
  • Access to St Mary’s Court will be provided at all times but may incur a lengthy wait.
  • Parking on Dogpole will be suspended for the duration of the construction period.
  • Emergency vehicles will have access at all times.

Drainage covers will be reset as part of this work and the materials used will need to gain strength before the covers can be overrun. There may be periods during the road closure when no work is being carried out while these materials gain strength.

Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said: “It is unfortunate that the surfacing has deteriorated so quickly after the scheme was completed.

“This work is essential to remedy the situation. However, we regret the inconvenience this may cause. Every effort is being made to minimise the disruption and to clearly sign the diversionary route.

“We have sent out information to residents and businesses in the area to let them know the details of this.”

Dr Maxwell Winchester, Shropshire Councillor for the Quarry and Coton Hill, added: “I am disappointed that the surface has deteriorated so quickly but glad the contractor is willing to rectify the problem at their expense and in a manner that will cause minimal disruption."
