Inspections

We inspect our highway bridges and cattle grids every two years. Our experienced bridge inspectors carry out these ground level inspections and identify any repairs.

If we cannot inspect all elements of a bridge this way, we will carry out a principal inspection, using access equipment. Principal inspections are normally carried out every six years.

Diving inspections are also carried out every six years on bridges founded in deep water, unless floods warrant an earlier inspection. Specialist diving contractors carry out these inspections and also carry out any repairs.

We also carry out unplanned inspections to establish the condition of a bridge or other highway structure following an accident or incident.

Maintenance of highway structures

We prioritise the repairs and maintenance works required and commission the work according to the available budget.

We have a term contract with Enterprise for highway maintenance and repair, and they carry out the majority of work on highway structures.

Our revenue budget normally funds these maintenance works.
