Highways team south

Vote for our unsung heroes

You have the chance to give some of Shropshire's unsung heroes the recognition they deserve by voting in the Council Worker of the Year Awards 2008.

Shropshire County Council's Highways technicians team, who cover the south Shropshire and Bridgnorth area, are one of the finalists in the 'flood response' category in this year's awards.

The team look after our roads, pavements and drains, and are through to the finals for the national award after an extremely demanding 2007, which saw severe snow, gales and unprecedented flooding.

The team often worked through the night, putting their personal lives on hold, to keep our roads clear and Shropshire residents safe, even carrying some people through rising floodwater to make sure they were out of harm’s way.

The team is one of just 41 finalists, out of 350 entries from local councils across the UK, to be shortlisted for the seven awards this year - innovation, leadership, care and commitment, lifetime service, team of the year and bravery. The special flood response category has been introduced for the first time this year to reflect the extraordinary events of last year.
