In its role as a highway authority, Shropshire County Council is responsible for maintaining the following highway structures:

  • 958 highway bridges. In this case the term ‘bridge’ refers to any structure which has a clear span of 1m or more. Spans of less than this are considered to be drainage structures.
  • 56 cattle grids
  • Numerous retaining walls (the exact number is not known at present). The county council has recently started a thorough survey of the highway retaining walls within Shropshire in order to develop a reliable inventory of those that it is responsible for. This work is being carried out by Mouchel Parkman, consulting engineers, and started in January 2006.
