Advanced driving

Road Safety advanced driving logos

The road safety team recommend any driver training to improve safety on our roads. On this page, you will find information on advanced driving courses, Pass Plus, fleet training and driver skills courses.

Pre Driver Support Scheme

Do you take a learner driver out for extra practice sessions?

The council will pilot a free one day Pre Pass Support Scheme course on the 30 October 2010.

The free award winning course is designed to help anyone who takes a learner driver out for extra practice sessions. It will help mentors understand how they can provide the best support and advice for the learner.

There will be a theory and practical session which both the learner and accompanying driver can attend. The course will give friendly support and advice so you both get more out of your practical sessions.

Please contact Eileen Taylor at road safety education for further information.

Pass Plus Extra discount scheme

Shropshire Council is encouraging new drivers to increase their skills by registering for Pass Plus Extra. The scheme involves attending a two hour workshop followed by six hours practical training which includes experience on a motorway, night driving, town and country driving and all weather driving. See what is included in the course on the DirectGov website by using the link on this page.

The council pays £70 towards the course and new drivers pay a maximum of £60. On completion of the course you will be issued with a certificate which can be used to gain a substantial discount on your first year’s insurance from a list of companies.

Workshops run in Shrewsbury and it is also possible to attend in Telford or Stafford. The next Shrewsbury workshop is planned for the 1 November 2010 and in Telford on the 6 December 2010.

Please contact Eileen Taylor at road safety education for further information. Online facilities are not currently available.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists

Over 90% of crashes are due to driver error. Advanced drivers have, statistically, fewer crashes. This is due to the fact that they have been taught to drive defensively and to use the Police system of control.

The Institute's 'Skill for Life' course costs £139 and contains everything you need to pass your Advanced Driving Test and membership of the IAM. The courses are run throughout the year and some insurance companies may offer discounts to Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) members.

To find out more contact 0845 0945 650, visit the Shropshire IAM website or the national website by using the links on this page.

The RoSPA Advanced Driving Test

Absolutely any qualified driver could become an advanced driver, given some instruction and practice.

There is a national network of local groups that have trained and experienced tutors willing to offer you, free of charge, advice, support and driving assessments to prepare you for the test. You should consider taking the test for all sorts of reasons:

  • Improved skills will make you safer and you will have more enjoyment from your car.
  • Traffic crashes account for almost half of all accidental deaths in Britain.
  • Passing the RoSPA test will prove that you are a driver of the highest standard.
  • There will be less wear and tear on your vehicle.
  • Improved fuel consumption.
  • Reduced levels of driver stress.
  • Lower insurance premiums.

Fleet training and driver skills courses

The IAM, RoSPA and other organisations offer fleet training for companies of all sizes - use the links on this page to find out more.

Shropshire Council's Driver Skills Course aims to make driving more enjoyable by increasing awareness, improving hazard recognition, addressing collision avoidance techniques and improving driving skills. It is a one day course and includes theory and practical sessions at a cost of £65 per person.

The road safety team can also provide senior citizen awareness schemes and minibus training with assessments. Please see the driver assessment page link on this page for more information about assessments or contact Eileen Taylor at the road safety section.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) can also provide presentations to older drivers - see the link on this page for more information.
